About Me:

My first horse, Sparks' story.
When my dad and trainer went to go get him vetchecked, the vet said that he was in tip-top shape, perfectly healthy, other than the concerns with some abnormal spots in his eyes. My dad still chose to buy him for me, and when I got home from school, I got to see my new horse. I was ecstatic! If only I knew what was going to happen in the next 7 months.

Sparks was an amazing horse, more than I could have asked for. He was not the sweetest, or nicest, or easiest horse to ride in the world. He was definitely a challenge and had loads of personality! Still, I loved him and was happy with him. The first time I rode him, there were puddles everywhere in the arena from when it had rained a few days prior, and he did not like the water at all. He bucked me off, and I refused to get on him again that day, but still, my trainer being a trainer made me get on and try again. He was still very anxious and we were having minor, little crow-hops. After riding him for a couple of weeks, we were going well, until my trainer's little dogs ran into the arena, freaking Sparks out, who took off from an extended trot, to a full gallop. I flew off and plummited into the ground. Sparks ran back to me after calming himself down, and we tried again. He was perfectly behaved, and I was at ease again.

Unfortunately, we had to move Sparks from my trainers house after keeping him there for about 3 or 4 months, to a boarding facility closer to my home. Sparks and I had the best of times there. I could see him every single day, and get the quality time I wanted with him. We were in heaven, basically.

After a couple of months, I noticed some changes in Sparks behavior. He became very ancey of me being on his right side, and he would always flinch if I touched his face on the right. Soon enough, his right eye turned completely green. Everyone at the barn thought that maybe he just had an infection.

We had the local vet come out and take a look. I hoped for the best, but she told me he had gone completely blind in his right eye, and had signs of going blind in his left. The diagnosis was Moon Blindness, something that is common in Appaloosas, or Appaloosa Crosses like him. She asked me what I had been doing with him, and what I planned to do. I told her that we had been working on Dressage and were planning to jump in the future. She said that since he had not always been blind,(since birth), he would not be safe to jump and event.

I was crushed. Later, I got even worse news. My dad told me about how when he went to buy him, he knew about the condition, and that he and the seller had made a deal that if he went blind before the age of 16, then she would take him back and retire him completely.

My perfect summer had turned into a nightmare. A week before school started, we took him back to his original home. But I saw that when we got there, it was a nice place, and Sparks looked happy. This all happened well over a year ago, and I have yet to see him again. The seller told my trainer that she gave him to an older man who planned on trail riding and just pleasure work until he goes completely blind.

I love and miss Sparks very much and I hope that he really is happy where he is now. I love you Sparks!

Hi Travis - thanks and good to hear from you. It might be a bit before I get a good video up of Max... he's absolutely gorgeous, but he's keeping me very, very busy right now. Had a bad allergic reaction recently and has an injury. Not to mention, he's got so much dang hair, I'm spending a lot of time taking care of that!! But I'll try soon. You look awesome in your vids. Congrats.
