About this user
I AMA pretender of life and happiness,
I am a beggar of hope who sits by the roadside
In wait of a charity offering,
In hopes of a discarded smile.
Lost in a world of "I could-have-been' s,
I am but a pilgrim of dusty streets of fear.
A destitute of heaven,
I drink aplenty of the chalice of sin
And its purgatorial consequences.
Omitted, forgotten,
Thrown aside by the pretensions of the holy
And the self-righteous,
I stumble about in the darkness
Of a $.99 paradise illuminated by neon lights.
Ostracized, detested,
I wallow in the shallow of prejudice and malice,
I inhale rancor and exhale unadulterated hate,
I eat resentment and defecate abhorrence.
Besieged,
I am sometimes subdued into a Machiavellian reality
and into the complacency of the stereotypical numbers
of a Machiavellic society,
only to find myself staring at the bottom of an empty bottle
That smells of drunken self-disgust
And inebriated self-pity.
Overwhelmed,
I drown in a pool of clichés and statistics
that erect walls and fences
In order to keep me out -or in.
But, I survive
like the painfully strident cry of "El Cura" Miguel Hidalgo's
"Viva la Virgen de Guadalupe!"
I survive,
like the softly spoken words
of "El Gigante", Don Benito Juarez'
"El respeto al derecho ajeno es la paz"
I survive,
like the savagely sanguinary thirst for justice
of "El bandido", Pancho Villa's
"¡Muerte al mal gobierno!"
I survive,
like the inexorably irrefutable demands
of "El Indio" Emiliano Zapata's
"¡Tierra y Libertad!"
I survive,
From the borders of my Spanish name
And the un-whiteness of my Mestizo skin
To the bars of my social cell
And the wet soapy kitchens
Of my "minimum wage" worth.
I survive,
from the slavery
of my father's mexican machismo
and the shackles
of my mother's catholic submission
to the ignorance of white history
and the foolish scorn of an individualistic society.
I survive
And I am proud, for I am history.
I bleed, for I am blood.
I laugh, for I am hope.
I love, for I am heart.
I cry, for I am pain.
I live, for I am life.
And, always, I fight,
For I am Mexican,
I am human,
I am child,
I am woman,
I am man.
And now,
I write
For I am.

Great music, great literature, great friends, the smile of a lovely woman -all women are lovely- and the hand shake of my brother-man.
