JA played The FieldHouse at UW Madison in early May 1970 and they were still at peak performance levels. This video is 6 months later and they've lost their center. Don't judge them by this. From late 1966 to mid 1970 they were on fire, probably the best live band in the world.

This is so rare - thanx very much for sharing this ! On their very first tour outside of California they performed alot of mellower music, with Grace playing both organ and recorder. By 1968 they had become a powerfully loud machine, with Embryonic Journey and Fat Angel the only " restrained " s...

I love Jefferson Airplane. I saw the band play live dozens of times 1966 -1970 when they were peaking. I also saw Hendrix & Cream and all the best - and feel confident in saying that when JA was hot, they were the best band in the world. Bcuz of all of that, I forgive them when their later stu...

This is one of my favorite Airplane songs. Speaking of the volume of Jacks bass - I remember one concert at the Aragon in Chicago, probably 1968. Blue Cheer was one of the opening bands and they were so loud it was shocking. Next, Jefferson Airplane played MUCH louder. Seriously - Jack's ...

The vocal are superb - you can hear humanity in Marty Balin's voice - and Jorma's guitar solo is stunning. Even Rolling Stone had to admit in their review of Volunteers that Jefferson Airplane Wooden Ships is truly " an epic performance. "

To all the comments about how JA sounded live : I saw them live over 30 times previous to 1971 and yes, they were uneven in performance. Sometimes the element of improvisation didn't work & they sounded out of tune & in need of focus - but when all elements clicked they were the best band in t...
