I grew up on the mountains of south western Virginia. My mom raised us 6 kids, and my dad worked for the railroad. My mom would go out to wave whenever his train passed by, and we kids always wondered how she knew. (he'd blow the whisle a certain way so she'd know it was him. :)

I am a WWII veteran who was assigned as a Gunner's Mate 2nd class on an LST. I trained in England, and fought throughout the Mediterranean (Africa, Sicily, Italy, France). I was wounded in Sicily. When Patton visited the hospital, he asked "what happened soldier." I replied, "shrapnel, sir." and went to the next soldier. I didn't tell him I was a Navy man in an Army hospital.

When I recovered, I was back out there and among those brave men that participated in the invasion at Normandy. I saw a lot of my friends die, but I never thought about dying yet.

At the end of the war, as my ship was passing through the Panama Canal on our way to fight in the Pacific, Truman dropped the bomb. I always said that Harry Truman saved my life because I was certain I would have died in the pacific. The best site ever was seeing the Golden Gate bridge on my way home!

When I got back, I married my high school sweetheart Margaret, and had a daughter and son while working for a coal mine in Harlan Kentucky. When the mine shut down, we moved to Georgia to find work, and that's where I stayed. Then my youngest daughter was born.

I have a wonderful family spread out in North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and Kentucky that I am very proud of! I love them all and wish I could see them more often.
