About this user
Im a beat-maker from NY, avid crate-digger. Third3ar or simply 3ar. I do what I do because Im pretty much just addicted to sound itself. Hard to explain but have you ever heard a song where you just LOVE only a small portion of it? Not even a melody, just one or two notes with a soulful accent behind it -- I always thought of it as the "peak" moment. Thats me, obsessor, I will play the same song a thousand times just to hear that 2-3 second segment because I feel something that I can't get enough of. I don't know what it is but there is something there and its powerful, I used to drive everyone crazy doing that.I started out using DAW's but I just couldn't capture that effect, digital is too clear, its like robot music, everything is too perfect and timed to a grid, quantized, every hat in its place, no soul and no human element.
Years of upgrading from one DAW to the next (flat broke and loving it lmao!), it wasn't until I got Logic Pro that I realized.. Im limited to only what the manufacturers provide, this pissed me off lol, like Im a kid and you give me what to play with, setting limitations on my creativity, the sound and feel of Hip Hop will not be dictated by a bunch of... Stock sounds are lazy, period. I saw the bigger picture at that point and knew exactly what I had to do...
Essentially I was searching for the kind of texture I grew up on, I didn't know it at the time -- real Hip Hop is secretive, nobody can really teach it to you. Bits and pieces of samples, rearranged and put back together, its an auditory anagram. A puzzle. Back-in-the-day producers did not use all the over-the-top equipment available today, real Hip Hop is minimal, use what you have and make it work! Make the best of it, lemons to lemon fucking merengue ok?
Vinyl is not something readily available, its outdated and.. But I tried everything else, *shrug* why not.. I've gone too far to turn back now, Im all in.. And the digging begins.. Yard sales, eBay, shops in the city -- if you've never bought vinyl before let me tell you, it is HEAVY! Catch a train and switch subways and walk all the way to BK and of course I want to make the journey worthwhile lol, bad idea.. Walking around carrying a big square bag weighing near 10 + pounds running for the train hoping it doesn't rip..
I also had to get a sampler, I was just exhausted of staring at the screen, I wanted to hold something in my hands so it feels like Im playing something.
From the moment I heard the first note of the first vinyl I bought for myself on my pos record player, my obsession with sound had graduated. I was enveloped with sound as opposed to flatness, the contrast was like comparing a 360 degree symphony to a dial-tone.
And here we are, that infinite line still progressing. If anything I want to open ears, *hear* the music (not just mine), hear sound like you've never heard it before, most people have no idea how to appreciate sound for what it really is, they add too many details and use artist's personalities to identify who they are in life, (in this respect, real Hip Hop is the most honest form of music) you've yet to scratch the surface. I cannot imagine why anyone would not want to tap into this raw energy, it is so strong that I often forget to eat.
I just want to bring some real respect to Hip Hop, it is long overdue.
Thanks for reading my story.. Enough about me, how about you?^^
