I am a skeptic, which simply means that I require good evidence for claims before accepting them, and I apply the same standards of evidence for all claims, both the ones I accept and the ones I reject. I don't relax those standards just because I might want to believe something.NanoThermite911 left a comment on my channel which expresses just one of the misconceptions people have about skeptics. The char limits are very strict in the comment section, apparently, so I might as well answer here - and hopefully illuminate a little about what skepticism is:
Skeptics are not blindly "reinforcing the official storyline". What real skeptics do is apply the same standards of evidence across the board, to the claims of both conspiracy theorists, and the "official storyline". Rejecting a conspiracy theory does not mean blindly accepting whatever "the government" or any other perceived authoritative source says wholesale, without looking at the evidence. That is a false dichotomy that I see conspiracy theorists often making - either accept their conspiracy, or you consider the official authority's views and claims as scripture. There is a third option, one that real skeptics take: apply good skeptical approach to all claims, whatever the source. Skepticism requires that you demand good evidence, and that the more remarkable the claim, the more solid the evidence needs to be.
Skeptics also tend to be aware of the biases human psychology makes us all vulnerable to - confirmation bias, wishful thinking, selective memory and more. We are not invulnerable to such failings, but perhaps more aware of them, and consciously trying to combat them in our own approach to evidence.
The reason conspiracy theorists in general aren't considered skeptics by the skeptical community, is that they treat the evidence presented by the conspiracy theory side differently from the "official evidence" - often rejecting the latter out of hand, while accepting even very flimsy evidence as proof of the conspiracy, and generally not doing proper research on those claims. Conspiracy theories are also often held in a way that makes them unfalsifiable - if evidence against the conspiracy is presented, then that merely proves that you are covering it up either knowingly or as an unwitting tool of the official line, and if evidence that is seen to reveal a conspiracy is presented... well, there you go! So it's a win win situation for the conspiracy theory.
Skeptics require that all ideas worth their salt are falsifiable in principle - I do not put much stock into ideas that you cannot, with any evidence, show to be false.
Finally, when you compare actual conspiracies to the claims of many conspiracy theorists, you see a huge scale difference - the conspiracy theorists claim conspiracies much more elaborate (often unnecessarily so) and widespread than the real conspiracies that have been legitimately exposed. I find that conspiracy theorists make unreasonable demands of human psychology - the larger, the more intricate the conspiracy, the more nefarious it's aims, the less likely it is to remain a secret, the less manageable it is, the more likely it is to be properly exposed.
Skepticism is not the same as "reinforcing the official storyline". That's not what skeptics do, or why we mostly reject elaborate conspiracy theories.
