Life is all about being humble.

Fame and fortune are pipe dreams, attained only by a select, "lucky" few. The rest of us are "cursed" to live out our days on smaller salaries, and with more of that oh-so-pesky privacy. Unfortunately, many in western societies value success as strictly monetary, ruling out personal, emotional successes because they cannot be quantified. I love working with numbers (and as a result, I always quantify where something can be quantified,) but I have come to realize that unquantifiable successes are the most worthwhile successes one can attain.

I was never really a proud person. Although it sounds almost paradoxical to say this, I consider myself a very humble person. However, up until the end of last year, I found myself in the rut that most people wake up in every day: the rut of needing monetary success.

Toward the end of 2010, someone entered my life who changed my paradigm. The human body is a magnificent machine. Although it's not necessarily very efficient, given how much energy it requires to function (not to mention the fact that it can't survive in an environment that's not one hundred percent perfect for it,) it's never obsoleted by something better. The value of money decreases due to inflation, the capacity of computers to process information is constantly being improved (so much so that you could buy the most expensive computer on the market today, and it would already be obsolete,) and while you might have just spent four years' worth of salary on a beautiful house, someone is building one right now that's ten times bigger. The human body, on the other hand, never becomes obsolete (unless you take into consideration the slow process of evolution, [which we're not, by the way.]) Even more everlasting than the human body is the human mind. We are the only animal to achieve sentience (although I'm sure dolphins will get there soon enough.) The human body and mind is something that is far more valuable than material success. Lately, I've realized that.

I've learned that taking care of myself and the one that I love is more important than achieving fame or fortune; that money certainly offers temporary comfort, but that having a person in your life who is absolutely priceless is a permanent comfort. Truly, humankind has developed amazing technologies, but there is no machine more amazing than us humans. We who were born from primordial ooze and used our wit and audacity to climb to the top of the food chain.

People are worth much more than monetary success.

If you're depressed and looking for a way to get out, reach out to someone close to you. Form strong bonds with those around you, and let yourself be open to love and compassion. Money will not buy you happiness. Money will not buy you love. Money will not buy you friends. It will buy you ecstasy, sex, and leeches, but nothing more.

Make the best of your life; as corny as it sounds, it's too short to waste. Don't chase your tail for years searching for your big break, because I can almost guarantee you that you won't get one. Learn to live humbly and learn to appreciate what you have. I'm a middle-class white American; there are people out there who have it worse in terms of money, prejudice, opportunities, and even basic needs for survival.

Learn to love and appreciate what you have instead of constantly looking for something more.
