With Chet it was always about the music, and not about technical fireworks. That's why his versions of songs like this are so listenable. Watch and listen - his hands seem to move smoothly and effortlessly - the mark of a true virtuoso - and the tempo never wavers.

Some problems maintaining constant tempo on that Borsalino piece. Lots of pyrotechnics here - the guys got serious skill, but musically? hmmmm.

Watch Paul Mandell keeping a close eye on his sheet music throughout this. Looks like he might not have had much rehearsal time with these guys before the show! A fine guitarist, but lost in Chet's shadow for much of his career.

This is a piece of history that all us Chet fans can appreciate. Thanks for posting it. And yes - as said earlier, it was a choke-you-up moment to see how much his illnesses had diminished Chet's physical strength. He died just two years later.

He's playing "Recuerdos de la Alhambra" by Francisco Tarrega, a well known piece for classical guitar...and doing a nice job of it. See also his performance of this with the Boston Pops uploaded by HuntinBoots.

Agreed - lack of tremolo and the tinkly accompaniment spoil it. Perhaps age had impaired Segovia's skills and dexterity and he had to play a simpler "lead guitar" version with this backup?

@klasikindo Yes - superb rendition. But also listen to Chet Atkins version w/ Boston Pops (who sit silently while he plays). A self-taught guitarist, famous for his "country pickin" finger style, Atkins in his later years moved into classical, semi-classical and acoustic guitar interpretations ...
