Uyghur is one of the Turkic ethnic groups living
in the northwestern region of the present China. The official Chinese name of the region is Xinjiang (or Sinkiang) Uyghur Autonomous Region , but the native Uyghurs have historically called this region East Turkistan. Located in Central Asia, 1500 miles from Beijing, East Turkistan is bordered by Kazakhstan to the north, Mongolia to the northeast, and Kirghizstan and Tajikistan to the northwest and west. To the west and southwest lie Afghanistan and Pakistan, and to the south are Tibet and India, to the east lies China. East Turkistan is a vast land of 1600,000 square kilometers.Geographically, it is the China's largest province. Uyghurs have established empires and kingdoms throughout history.The uyghurland is rich in natural resources they have metals and jewels such as uranium, platinum, gold, diamond, ruby and emerald. They also have iron, lead, copper, silver, sulfur, tin and mica. They have rich energy resources like coal, oil and gas. It is estimated that the amount of the coal there are quarter of the entire China's and the amount of oil and gas there are 1/3 of the entire China's. Though there are plenty of natural resources in their land, the Hans are dominating them and take that to Central. Uyghur people's resentment for this is large. Even Kashgar called 'Land of Uyghur', the life and culture of Uyghurs are being destroyed by the hegira of Hans. Cityscape of the Silkroad is also being changed into a totally different style.
East Turkistan has been the home of Uyghurs for more than 2000 years, and remained as a free and independent country during the most period of those 2000 years. However the Chinese has been claiming that East Turkistan is an ancient and inseparable part of China. Historical facts clearly show that such a claim by China is based on a false interpretation of history and grounded in the hope that suppression and assimilation will eventually establish this distortion as legitimate in the eyes of the world.
