I am an Abba Fanatic in Western Canada. I used to be known on YouTube as the "AbbaWatcher" (10 Abba videos daily for 3 years, 10,000 views in total) and gained a reputation for thoughtful comments. I narrowly missed seeing Abba in 1979, but I have seen: The Beatles (1966, their 3rd last concert ever), Johnny Cash & June Carter (1968 & 1972), Fleetwood Mac (1990), The Rolling Stones (2006), The Who (2006), Bob Dylan (2006), Madonna (2008), U2 (2009), Aerosmith (2010), Diana Ross (2010), Elton John (2010), Mike Love of the Beach Boys (2010), The Black-Eyed Peas (2010), Heart (2011), Rod Stewart & Stephanie (Stevie) Nicks (2011), Peter Noone of Herman's Hermits (2011), Burton Cummings of the Guess Who (2011), Carlos Santana (2011), The Moody Blues (2011), Gordon Lightfoot (2011), Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys (2011), Chicago (2012), AND MY FAVORITE, THE SWEDISH ARRIVAL (January 2011), who put on a terrific show to rival any of the artists just mentioned, and who were easily comparable with Abba itself, and did some songs even better, at the beautiful & historic Vancouver Orpheum, in company with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. The Spirit of Abba is a catalogue of (nearly) every Abba and Mamma Mia video on YT, spread over 5 pages, for security reasons, each having 250 favorited videos, about 1000 in all. The other four pages are called TheSpiritofAbbaPart2, Part3, Part4, Part5; the spirit part of the name referring to Abba's highly positive musical, cultural & social influence. Duplicate videos are omitted, as are videos that replicate events, I group the tours together, the TV specials together, the interviews together, and as I enjoy travel, intersperse the music with select travellogues, some of them amusing, of places in the world that Abba visited. A huge thank you to all the video posters worldwide, I also like to think "The Spirit of Abba" refers to all of them and all the fans, who have made YT the greatest source of audio visual info on this group of all time during a very exciting period in this group's history, and the Abba community is one of the nicest communities about anything on the YouTube website.
I first got interested in ABBA in 1974 when I heard 'Waterloo' on the radio. I like Abba for lots of reasons: the style of music, the fresh clean culture, the intelligent and positive state of mind. I used to think that nothing could challenge the artistic and political statements of the big groups of the 1960's, Beatles, Rolling Stones, The Who, The Doors, The Cream etc. Now I know that is not true, Abba did it in a slightly quieter way in the 1970's, their social and political statement was 2 smart, strong, liberated, beautiful and highly talented women, which was extremely rare in those days (95% of music artists were male) and was as important a message as anything that has ever happened in music. The 1970's was the time of women's liberation, as well as sexual iberation, in the western world, and ABBA was a very notable and tangible expression of this. It should also be noted that pop, rock and blues music were usually discredited and discouraged by the older generation in those days, and that generation had immense authority, credibility, power, control, and influence in society.
Lots of places in the world have their Abba connection: Australia, Europe, Japan, South America, and of course, Scandinavia. I suppose ours here is the start of the 1979 World Tour in Edmonton and then on to Vancouver, which Abba liked so much they altered a busy schedule and stayed an extra day in the sunshine of Sept 15-16, 1979
It got the tour off to a great start. I missed them in Vancouver by 1 millimeter, and was ready to chase them down the west coast of the USA and even across North America in the hopes of catching up to them and seeing them live.
My biggest regret now is that I thought it was impossible then.
I intensely dislike the new changes.
