Skip Pruitt hails from Detroit, MI, a city which has contributed more than its fair share of creativity toward every genre. Beside the obvious Motown records and Michael Jackson, Detroit has always and will continue to put out top rate artists in every genre. From Jazz and Blues to Techno to Garage Rock, we invent and reinvent music here.

So, on with the review. Skip Pruitt embodies the sound of Grover Washington, Jr with the energy of Charlie Parker. This is a smooth and sexy album that actually jams. I can hear influences of Detroit legends James Carter and Kenny Garrett in his playing, all the while keeping the music accessible. To call this album "smooth" is only somewhat accurate, because while it's polished, it is also actually interesting to listen to. As a "traditional" Jazz fan, this is "smooth" jazz that doesn't make me cringe. My main complaint is that vocals, while technically well executed, don't rise above the level of current R&B singing the same way Skip's solo hover far above current smooth Jazz. I would have liked to heard the singers open up a little more and pull in some classic Motown and early R&B sounds. In my opinion, I would like to hear the singers be more influenced by Marvin Gaye, classic Tina Turner, and some Ella. The singing is nice, but not as good as the music itself. Perhaps this was a producer decision-I always blame producers for smoothing things out too much. The singing is why I rate this album four instead of five stars. For those who love current vocal styling, you should consider this a five-star review. This album spans many genre's from the groovy gospel of "Revival" to the silky-smooth "Let Me Hold You". This is a varied and diverse recording and a pleasure to listen to.

I see a potential for great things coming from this player. I could see Skip releasing an album of be-bop or modern jazz in the future, kind of like Kenny Garrett.

If you normally listen to smooth Jazz, this album has to be in your collection, because, except for Grover Washington, Jr and Earl Klugh, you aren't going to find a smooth musician who can actually play real jazz. As a smooth album, this is by for the best thing I've heard in a long time.
