The UK is just a state. There is no such thing as "British nation", or at least nobody believes in it. So if Scotland finally becomes independent an Englishman may regret it, but otherwise his own nation is safe. He continues being an Englishman; with a smaller Army or GDP, whatever, but "nationally" untouched.
But Spain is BOTH a state AND a nation. So if the Basques and/or the Catalans depart, the Spanish nation ceases to exist as well. It's not Catalonia and Spain, but Catalonia and THE REST of Spain.
I agree that Catalonia is nation too. But it simultaneously belongs to the Spanish nation. The latter does not exist without the former. That's why separatism in Spain is just nonsense.
