I love physics and am an enthusiastic proponent of the scientific method. I feel that it is very foolish to live your life guided by superstition, magic, and bronze-age books. We don't get our moral guidance from a supreme being. Rather, evolution has burned our morals into our DNA because we are social creatures living in a complex society. We could not survive without an innate set of internal rules to guide us and give us a framework which promotes cooperation and allows us to thrive together. I don't need a god telling me not to kill or cheat my neighbor. You are really seriously sick if you need someone or some God to tell you what's right and what's wrong. My parents are born-again Christians and, to my great regret, I was raised in a way consistent with their beliefs. I rejected those beliefs in my 20's and now find those beliefs abhorrent. I have experienced both sides of religion and could never go back.
I am evidence driven and try to make decisions in life based on evidence. Unfortunately, being human, I don't always manage to do that.
Our collective inability as a country to differentiate between evidence and mere assertions is hurting us greatly. Throwing away science and science education because it conflicts with the teachings of animal sacrificers 2000 years ago and self appointed authority figures will be our downfall if we are not careful.
@WildwoodClaire1 Santorum made the comment that under Obama, we would have to worry about guillotines but I think it's more likely that under Santorum, we would have to be worried about burnings at the stake and stonings. He was clearly born about four centuries too late.
