Im based in Port Elizabeth (originally from Europe Bulgaria). For 6 years I worked as Development/Design/Process Engineer in Hi Tech Automotive.
It was a valuable experience being involved with the Noble M12, Cobra Daytona Coupe, Ford GT 40, Lotus 7, and some Hot Rods for the American market.
In 2005 I've established Technikol Engineering and 2006 left Hi Tech.
2007 I was contracted as an Engineer for the building of the VW Formula cars through VW Motorsport in Uitenhage.
2008 racing season Race Engineer with Terry Moss Racing Formula VW, Audi A4, VW Polo etc.
Being busy with such demanding jobs left me very little time for my personal hobby projects. I dont even want to mention the budget.
The Trike I started building 5 years ago. Only for the last 6 months I could spend more time working on it.
Chevy Small Block and Standard Automatic gearbox were modified for better performance and coupled to Falcon Live Axle through a short propshaft.
Two Turbos were added just in case. Shelby thought if more is better than too much is just fine. I agree.
Being all exposed the exhaust system and the turbo housings were ceramic coated for better appearance.
Around this setup I built the space frame out of 50mm stainless tubes. Frame weight - 56 kg.
The front fork is entirely custom built since no stock item can cope with the lateral loads (the trike doesnt lean into the corner).
Rear brakes remained from the Falcon axle altogether with the hand brake.
The front brake is Wilwood 4 piston caliper and 305mm - 32mm wide brake disc.
The entire brake system is operated through single master cylinder brake pedal to retain the designed ratio for maximum braking power.
The fuel tank is folded in 1.6mm Stainless Steel for safety. It takes 65 liters.
With the Hot Rods the aim is to minimize the appearance of fasteners, cables, wires and auxiliary devices.
Therefore the throttle handle is custom designed to fit the entire mechanism inside the handle bar.
The original water pump was removed from the front of the engine for more space for the alternator into the narrow frame and I've made an electrical water pump by coupling a turbine from a small turbo IHI RHF4 onto electric motor from an air horn.
The rear springs had to operate with 280kg rear end empty weight and double than that with fuel and two adult passengers.
There are no such springs.
Air springs with variable (dash handle and pressure gauge) force were in order, hence the onboard air compressor and cylinder.
The geometry of the front and rear suspension is designed to counteract dive while braking and rear drop on acceleration.
The lateral stability is controlled by massive sway bar.
The result is outstanding road manners. Very good high speed stability thanks to the carefully calculated castor angle. Hard cornering (harder than what the rider can hold onto the seat) is generated from the generous amount of rubber on the road and the very low center of gravity.
The power is still modest plus minus 350 BHP without the turbo controllers installed (still working on it).
The total weight is around 600 kg., but I'm still adding stainless steel cosmetic covers.
Project like this is never fully finished and since one can not refer from previous experiences with 400hp trikes, theres a lot of development and experimental work.
Now its nearly there.
I think overall it will be very interesting project for the motrheaded society.
@Jagethemage ...thanks for the comment to the point. yeah, trikes are not even my cup of tea, but if you want to do something that very few are doing properly trike is the way to go....as for the condescending ignoramuses, they pretty much know exactly where and what they are .... shaken by compl...
