The Original Shockjock You Tube channel was created as a tribute (and for historical accuracy and context) to the originator of the so-called "shock" jocks, Steve Dahl. While he was never shocking just to be shocking (just to be funny!) it is his brutally honest, free-form style of comedy talk radio which created an entire genre, which is today taken for granted but was previously unheard of in radio before Steve.

Our attempt is to examine and chronicle Steve's more than 30 years on the air in Chicago, looking at the time-line and the many interesting aspects of Mr. Dahl's career in comedy talk radio and beyond.

All audio is property of the respective owners (in most cases Steve Dahl himself) and is here purely for the educational and historical purposes of demonstrating Mr. Dahl's pioneering effect on comedy talk radio and popular culture, to show that he truly is the original of the 'shockjock' era.

Describe Your Comedy:

Steve Dahl is the original of the "shock jocks" and the innovator of what has been labeled the "shock radio" genre. Long before many others (that will happily take the credit) Steve was the first to hang with porn stars and freaks, talk about his small genitalia, argue with his wife on the phone, have in-studio spankings (any of this sounding familiar?), talk openly about sex and drugs, the first "show about making a show" on radio, and so much more that is today taken for granted, but 30 years ago it was a completely new and different kind of radio. There were no Howard Stern, Don Imus or Opie &Anthony type shows, at least not in the free-form style that Steve Dahl was already doing from 1978-80, (and really starting in Detroit in 76-77). Imus and Stern were both around but fairly tame compared to "The Shockness Monster" Steve Dahl. Steve Dahl is truly the pioneer of taking-it-to-the-edge comedy radio, he started a new style that is still often imitated to this day.

The biggest difference between Steve and some of the others mentioned is that Steve has changed and grown as opposed to being stuck with the same radio gimmicks that many of his later imitators are still stuck on! He has never stopped being funny, edgy, or at times completely over the top, but he has continually re-invented himself while still being a unique personality and blazing a distinct comedy radio trail like no other.
