The ninth day of Dhul-Hijjah is the day of 'Arafah, on this day the pilgrims gather at the mountain plain of 'Arafah, praying and supplicating to their Lord.
It is mustahabb (highly recommended) for those who are not pilgrims to fast on this day, since the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) was asked about fasting on the day of 'Arafah, so he said, "It expiates the sins of the past year and the coming year."
the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said, 'There is no day on which Allaah frees people from the Fire more so than on the day of 'Arafah.
The day of 'Arafah is the day when the pilgrims stand in worship on the Mountain of 'Arafah.
"Fasting the day of 'Arafah expiates the [minor] sins of two years: a past one and a coming one. And fasting the day of 'Aashooraa' expiates the sins of the past year." [Muslim]

"Seek knowledge, because seeking it for the sake of Allah is a worship. And knowing it makes you more God-fearing; and searching for it is jihad, teaching it to those who do not know is charity, reviewing and learning it more is like tasbeeh. Through knowledge Allah will be known and worshipped. With the knowledge Allah will elevate people and make them leaders and imams, who will in turn guide other people." "He whom death overtakes while he is engaged in acquiring knowledge with a view to reviving Islam with the help of it, there will be one degree between him and the Prophets in Paradise ." [Al-Tirmidhi Hadith no. 249. Narrated by Al-Hasan al-Basri]
There is great virtue in fasting in these first nine days, or some of them, especially on the Day of Arafat.

The Fast of Yawmul 'Arafah
The fast of 'Yawmul 'Arafah' has been emphasized by the Most Beloved Prophet (Salla Allahu Ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam) as a mustahabb (desirable) act. According to a Hadith, the fast of this day becomes a cause, hopefully so, of forgiveness for sins committed in one year.
Abu Qatadah (Radi Allahu anhu) reported that Sayyadina Rasullullah (Salla Allahu Ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam) said: " I have hope in Allah Ta'ala that the fast of Arafah will be an atonement for the sins of the past and the forthcoming year." (Muslim & Tirmidhi)
"The Holy Prophet (Salla LLahu Aalayhi Wa Salaam) was the most patient among men,
the bravest, the best judge, and he who pardoned most. ...
he was the most charitable man. He did not pass a single night hoarding a single dirham or dinar. Whenever any excess money came to him and if he did not then get anyone to accept it as charity,
he did not return home till he gave it to the poor and the needy.
He did not store up for more than a year the provision of his family members which Allah was pleased to give him.
He used to take one fifth of what easily came to him out of dates and wheat. What remained in excess,
he used to give in charity. He used to give away in charity to him who begged of him of anything,
even out of his stored up provision.

InshaAllah people do expect to fast on Friday [depends on the moon's sight] as Thur is going to be 29th.
