Just as Fritz Pfleumer developed the Magnetophon almost 20 years before anyone in America knew about it, I was unaware of the Philips multitrack. It's amazing how isolated countries were then, compared to today, so that an invention like a tape recorder or multitrack tape recorder would not be common knowledge for people everywhere in the recording industry.
Les Paul said that even when he finally got the Ampex machine in 1956, it still didn't work properly. He sent it back three times and finally resorted to using local electronics people who actually tweaked his 8-track would work. He could have had a multitrack recorder five years sooner if he'd known about the Philips machine.
