My grandfather on my moms side was Clifton Dunnigan Of Connacht province county Sligo, Mayo with family throughout Ireland all the way to Edinburgh Scotland!!!! of course england anglicized it to the more english spelling of Duncan.... Originally a Celtic name the Dalriadan Celts or Celtic Scotii (Scots) from Ireland to be exact. it is one of the oldest surnames in both Ireland and Scotland originally from the name "MacDhonniadh" pronounced MacDonagh.... Same as Thomas MacDonagh one of the members of the IRB(Irish Republican Brotherhood) that was executed for his part in the EASTER RISING OF 1916 i have historical irish documents that show i am a descendant of Thomas MacDonagh and i am DAMN PROUD!!!!! The name spread through out Ireland and Scotland. The Clans motto is.... "Disce pati" Meaning both learn to endure and "Learn To Suffer" I have some scottish in me aswell as irish..... if you ever want to have an interesting discussion ask me about how irish and scottish people are basically the same people divided by religion and politics.... Irish = simply means 'Roman Catholic', the Irish exist only in name, it's a 16th century name imposed by Pope Leo X. Ulster was never Irish, even the Irish called Ulster 'Cruithne' the same as the Scots/Picts - same thing and called all of Ulster and Scotland by that name, which meant "Tribes of the Designs" because of the Scots/Picts tattoos.
