The Luna Show, a haven of videos for researchers & people interested in the house and ball scene & its lustrous creativity
About Me:
I started doing "The Luna Show" because over the years I have noticed a lack of documentation about the house and ball scene. People always use the documentary film "Paris is Burning" as the only reference but this scene is a lot more special than the films portrayal. In the first place the House and Ball scene has been a vital force in NYC History for nearly 100 years, through the Harlem Renaissance to the present time and beyond New York. There is a ball and house scene in almost every major American city as well as ball-like structure in Canada, Spain, France and London.
The concern and especially difficult part in dealing with the ballroom culture and history is that there is small evidence that survived for critical appraisals. So much ballroom information and knowledge and history is composed and received by second hand assessments since the AIDS epidemic hit this community hard in the early 1980's and 1990's. Every time a Ball Legend died, a little piece of history died with them. This has left us to fish for clues of balls of yesteryear in photographs, old ball flyers and old VHS footage. One of a kind garment by the hands of Avis Pendavis, David Ian Xtravaganza or Marcel Christian is non-existent. It was only in the late 1980's that historians have come to appreciate the extent and depth of these communities' contributions to the rest of the world. It's no secret that POP Culture and fashion have taken parts of what our ballroom ancestors have created.
With "The Luna Show", I try to document and preserves some of the rich histories of the people in the scene; the ball walkers who Vogue, Runway, Face or Realness themselves into POP Culture. Its History continues to grow; hopefully I am able to create a haven of videos for researchers and people interested in the house and ball scene and its lustrous creativity.
