I have but one wish for my beloved country, that the wounds of division be healed, East and West, French and English.
We all share this land, let us build it into a monument to an accomplished dream, not a derelict shrine for the romantics to reminisce of what could have been, but never was.
Create in this country a bilingual nation. We have the legislation, let it become practice. We lose nothing, but it will go far to heal the seething wounds.

Mr. Layton will live on through his legacy as a hero, an inspiration, and a model for other Canadians. He will live on in a profound way in our consciences, a way that defies the narrow definition offered by words, much like Mr. Layton himself.
On this day his family does not mourn alone. Canada stands beside them in grief.
