Late to the party on this, but I have to say that it's inconclusive. A) The marker is masking the goal line, so it's a bit hard to tell exactly where the puck is sitting when it goes on edge. B) There's no vertical camera angle that shows the puck FULLY crossing the line.

@tikitimeproductions My guesses... #1, so the tar doesn't seep through to the other side. #2, gives you grip when you're using it to apply the tar to your bat. #3, stop the rag from rolling up on itself and so you can fold it up for storage so the tar doesn't get all over everything.
