A little bit of a rant: The new definition of LOSER is now the guy who's making a movie.
OK - First... Film Making is a collaborative effort and the sum of all the Arts.
Second - Any artist or musician will tell you: you have 10,000 bad drawings or attempts at playing an instrument before anything decent comes out.
So you gonna make a hot movie first time at bat ?
OK, Mr. Future Film Maker... Your homework assignment, if you choose to accept it:
Edit a three minute tribute to your favorite Movie ...
3 MINUTES FLAT - not 2 minutes, 49 seconds and 10 frames..- Not 3 minutes , 1 second and 19 frames.... 3 MINUTES.. and edit it within ONE DAY.
If you cover two movies, like I have, You get one extra minute. Three movies: another 30 seconds. (total:4:30)
Why? Two reasons... One, in the landscape of professional software - Video Editing is too damn easy to learn. I'm not impressed with someone's video production reel when they slam clips together with loud music - Doesn't mean anything. I will be impressed if you built a turn key editing system with a sound board, AJa or Blackmagic breakout box to an HD playback monitor while moving files between AE, PS, Al. 3Dmax and such without losing resolution.
Two, Develop context and tell a story.. Don't be overly flashy yet don't be boring. Don't forget, You are suppose to be a storyteller.
So take the challenge : Dissect your favorite films, learning how they flow editing wise while working to create something worthy of the original movie.
There's a difference between passively watching the movie on a couch and getting intimate with the actual shots - right down to the frame. In art school, they would make you re-create a famous piece of work.. so shouldn't you study the pieces that influence you?
