The "ergo" IS in the Meditations, you're not crazy and I'm not trying to accuse you of being mistaken. And it definitely does play an important part in the sentence. It's just a really geeky fact that he didn't explicitly state it in the original manuscript. Like...really really geeky. Like when my APUSH teacher (who claimed she had been possessed by demons and that death followed her home one day) told us how tall each US president was from memory. As for the grammar - I don't know. I mean, I've taken Latin and it's pretty crazy, so I've always just assumed it was acceptable.
