About The Hour Newspapers

The Hour Newspapers consist of The Hour, The Stamford Times and the Wilton Villager newspapers. The first issue, with a Westport dateline, appeared on May 6, 1871. The paper later moved to Norwalk and had several locations in the uptown area, finally settling on a building at the foot of Mill Hill. Along the way, the newspaper became a daily, beginning in 1895. It is the only independent daily newspaper in Fairfield County.

The evolution of newspapers in this country began with the itinerant printer who moved from town to town with a shirt full of type. They generally were outspoken types who put their thoughts down on paper, and too often riled enough people in the newest town to depart quickly just ahead of the tar and feathers.

Later printers who became more permanent town fixtures, had their own agendas or special causes. One such person was Brainerd W. Maples who founded a newspaper to carry on a war of words with the New Haven Railroad.

Maples was a teacher who commuted to New York daily on the New Haven from his home in Westport. He misplaced his commutation ticket one day and was put off the train in White Plains.

A stream of vitriolic letters to New York and Connecticut papers were so vituperative they never got published. The only answer was to found The Hour. The first issue, with a Westport dateline, appeared on May 6, 1871.

The paper later moved to Norwalk and had several locations in the uptown area, finally settling on a building at the foot of Mill Hill. Along the way, the newspaper became a daily, beginning in 1895.

After Maples' death, ownership eventually went to Edward J. Thomas, who worked as a reporter in Danbury and Norwalk, later becoming the business manager of The Hour. The paper continued to grow under his leadership, and he purchased a 14-page press and installed more typesetting machines. When he died in 1933, ownership of the paper was transferred to his wife, Nellie.

The newspaper entered the world of modern offset printing in 1976 when it moved to its present quarters at 346 Main Avenue. In the years since then, the newspaper added a Sunday edition and became a morning newspaper.

It is the only independent daily newspaper in Fairfield County.
