Drummer/Vocalist/Groovemaster

Russell A. Worrell (a Native New Yorker, Jamaica Queens), was born February 22, 1959 & resides in Queens, New York. Russell began playing the drums at the age of 6. At age 11, his mom enrolled him at The Long Island Institute of Music, where he studied under Mitchell Cohen, a great jazz drummer in his own right. As a youngster, Russell co-formed & played with "Me & My Friends", which was one of the popular bands out of the Jamaica Queens area in the late 70's-early 80's. It was with this experience that he was surprisingly introduced to his own singing voice. As the son of Bernard "Pretty" Purdie, Russell also spent those early years, along with his mom & sisters touring with King Curtis & Aretha Franklin & even sitting in at the Filmore West show in Detroit at the age of 14. Russell became a studio rat, hanging out with (Dad) Purdie at the various studio sessions:{Donny Hathaway, Roberta Flack, Aretha, Grady Tate, Steely Dan, Etc.}, while listening, learning & absorbing the approach to the drumkit, as it applies to groove, technique, keeping time, & playing with dynamics. His first professional gig came at the age of 15. Since then, Russell has applied his style of groove drumming in studio and live situations for over 30 years.

Russell plays the drums professionally, and loves what he does! His specialty is "groove drumming". He's put together some videos featuring himself playing to his favorite recordings, as he demonstrates his approach to the "groove" of the composition. For drummers in a rhythm section, keeping time, laying & holding the foundation is first and formost...the primary role of the drummer is to "drive" the band....which is not as easy as most may think....it takes discipline & focus. "In my opinion, it's easier to play alot of chops all over the place, than it is to hold down a groove." "For the up-and-coming drummers of today, i challenge you to play your "grooves" without fills...just try it......as you hear and feel the other instruments coming together with the groove that you are providing, you start to get the understanding of the power that you posess WITHOUT alot of "technical" playing....trust me, it's very rewarding!" This way of "shedding" (practicing), enables Russell to be at his best in studio & live situations, as it applys to tempo, approach, application, syncopation & dynamics! "This is his style of drumming....this is what he loooooves to do!.... just havin fun wit the groove!

Russell uses: Pearl drums: Sabian Cymbals: Evans Heads: Vic Firth Sticks: Rute 505 Vinyl Brushes(Vic Firth) "Flix" Vinyl Brushes(which he will be using in the videos) & Shure Microphones.
*To avoid using drum mics & headphones in the videos, Russell will be using his "flix" vinyl brushes & rute 505 vinyl rods to blend better with the recordings, while still bringing out the tones of the drums & cymbals.
