Grimoire Valentine is a scientist and father of Vincent Valentine who was introduced in Dirge of Cerberus -Final Fantasy VII-. His red ascot was specifically designed to be reminiscent of his son, Vincent's red bandanna.

Grimoire Valentine discovered the Cetran tablet that spoke of Omega and Chaos and was the one to write the first Omega Reports.
He subsequently located the place where Chaos was destined to be born, the Crystal Cavern, and traveled there with his trusted assisstant, Dr. Lucrecia Crescent.
Upon discovering Chaos Lucrecia brought it back to the Shinra laboratory in Shinra Manor and began her research in order to prove her thesis on Omega and Chaos.
But when Chaos broke free from it's tube and attempted to attack Lucrecia Grimoire Valentine pushed her out of Chaos' path and was instead hit by it.
Grimoire Valentine returned to the Planet soon thereafter, his last words being
"Tell my son that I am sorry".
Lucrecia saw herself as responsible for his death and grieved much.
Not long afterwards Vincent Valentine, the son of Grimoire Valentine, of the Turks was assigned to guard the scientists at the Nibelheim research station.
He there met Dr. Lucrecia Crescent, unknowing of her past connection with his father, and came to care for her.
But Lucrecia, afraid that Vincent too would die because of her actions, tried to push him away when he finally found out that she had known his father.
Vincent never blamed her or held her responsible for the passing of his father. But Lucrecia had lost her belief in herself, and so the past almost repeated itself with Vincent too losing his life to protect Lucrecia.
Though this time Lucrecia used the power of Chaos and the Protomateria to save Grimoire's son, who went to sleep in the basement below Shinra Manor.
Lucrecia then finished the reports on Omega and Chaos that Grimoire Valentine had begun before she faded away and came to remain only as a shadow of her former self, sealed away in the Crystal Cavern.
The research left by Grimoire Valentine on Chaos and how it was born from the stagnation of Lifestream was later used by other Shinra scientists in a terrible experiment. They took stagnated Lifestream and put it into hundreds of unborn children, the only succeful one was Nero the Sable...
