About The Gentleman's Club Improv

The Gentleman's Club is a longform monoscene troupe who use their stage time to peel back the layers of their characters and find out what makes them tick and in some cases, explode.

The Gentlemans Club comedy Improv troupe hails from Phoenix Arizona. The Gentleman's Club is three improvisors, Shane Shannon, Craig Chenery and Alex Tsuji and was formed in January 2009. The troupe was created to take part in the semi-annual Cerberus Cup competition that the Torch Theatre holds. The goal of the Cerberus Cup is to encourage participants to form new troupes and work with improvisers they may not have had the opportunity to do so with before.

Shane, Craig and Alex put the troupe together to try the Longform monoscene format. Longform Improv is a style of Improv that allows improvisers more stage time to develop characters as opposed to the short skit like sets or games that make up Shortform Improv. A show like televisions Whose line is it anyway is an example of Shortform. A Longform set can be made of multiple scenes whereas monoscene is one continuous scene for the entire show. The Gentlemans Club perform two completely improvised thirty minute sets based on suggestions from the audience. Monoscene is an especially challenging form of Improv due to the need to create strong characters that are of interest to the audience and that can be sustained for the entire show.

Craig wanted to called the troupe Shane, Craig and Tsuji or SCAT for short, not thinking of what scat means in the US. In Craigs defense, scat in England means quick and felt it worked well. Shane and Alex where quick to point out its other meaning. Shane suggested The Gentlemans Club and they left it to the toss of a coin. One tail later, The Gentlemans Club was born. The Gentlemans Club went on to win the Cerberus Cup and decided they would like to put forth the effort in making a run of the troupe.

At of this writing, The Gentlemans Club is the only three person monoscene comedy Improv troupe in Arizona and after 15 shows have achieved a regular slot at Club Mardi Gras in Scottsdale.
