Having the privelege to watch a 6 year old boy run across the room to be reunited with his Dad... shock and tears written all over his tiny face... it really makes you realise how important all these tiny kids are; and I have nothing but respect for his emotions, especially in front of his peers....

People from the bush would label me as a 'city boy'; but although I grew up in Sydney Australia, my formative years were spent living on acreage in one of Sydney's rural suburbs... where all our neighbours had real farms and farming livelihoods, and our family had an abundance of horses, dogs, cats, and chickens... with donkeys over the fence on one side and sheep on the other, and cattle at the back. Finding names for all these animals was wonderful! For instance, the three donkeys belonging to our right-hand neighbour were christened Leo, Matilda and Jessica. Matilda and Jessica were mother-and-daughter, and kept mostly to themselves; but Leo, the male, would LOVE to come over to have his back scratched... right in the place where he could never quite reach. Oh, the contentment!!What was most impactive about growing up here was having space to move around in and stretch your legs... land that was yours to know intimately down to the last blade of grass, leaf and twig... and all that SKY above you, that was totally yours to stretch your hands out to and soak up into the tips of your fingers and toes... day AND night... all those stars, full moons, and sunsets. You never realise just how important it is for every man, woman and child to have space to move around in and stretch your arms out in, both above and below you, until you are forced to leave that paradise behind... and experience living in medium-density circumstances like the majority of humanity.
I actually do feel a bit misplaced, since leaving that abundant paradise of my youth. I understand a little bit better now how some cultures, indigenous and otherwise, experience this... that the land of their people is more than just 'space to live'; it's a sense of knowing where you belong in the world, and the peace of mind that comes with that.
I am the eldest of 4 siblings and 2 step-siblings, and they are all married and with children. So I have 13 nephews and nieces... and counting. Being an uncle is perhaps my most favourite role to play. And thankfully, being single and without children of my own, I am given the luxury of playing Uncle Gav as thoroughly as I like. Nothing makes me feel happier and glow more warmly inside than when a 2-year old's hand swoops in out of nowhere, plucks you out of a large group of people, and drags you off to explore.
God has obviously been a part of my life way before I became aware of it. God plucked my parents out of obscurity when I was about 8 years old, and I've been attending church, discovering, wondering what on earth does God want, experiencing sadness as well as joy, and concentrating on keeping a relationship with God ever since. I'm no angel, by any means... that's probably why the story of the Prodigal Son has such a personal impact on me. And because it's a relationship (not a magic genie in a lamp), I've questioned, groaned, complained, gotten bitter and angry as well as elated and grateful with God... just like a real relationship. Honesty all the way... both the good and the bad.
My favourite quote is from C.S.Lewis' "Narnia" series... in particular, 'The Voyage of the Dawn Treader'. There's a quote in there that involves a character named Eustace... a boy who started out quite horrid, but after a lot of guidance in his life (mostly not realised until afterwards) by Aslan, became much improved and changed... not instantly perfect, but a continual work in progress. I like to take that quote and apply it to myself:
"It would be nice, and fairly true, to say that 'from that time forth Eustace was a different boy'. To be strictly accurate, he began to be a different boy. He had relapses. There were still many days when he could be very tiresome. But most of those I shall not notice. The cure had begun"
As creepy/disturbing as it was, I appreciated its message. When there were real-looking kids living real lives, the music was clear, the lyrics easy to hear. When we stepped into the underworld of poor kids dolled-up to their eyeballs in makeup, smiling and looking anything but happy, the sound w...
