As to the software I use...
I have used audacity, flstudios, and modplug tracker, i have used a keyboard once before to make parts of a song.
I recommmend using whatever ones you have availible and to try to find which ones you will find best.
I use any combination of them all using them based on the difficulty of achiving the noise or effect.
