JJ Spangler, aka "The Fireman," got his name in the early days as a Firefighter. The name stuck after an open mic set at a little coffee house. Not even sure if he was going to play, he sat back with his guitar, wearing his fire department shirt, and sunk into a comfortable old sofa. The stage eventually ran dry, and the host/ soundman just announced..."Hey! Fireman...come on up and play!" There were 20 or so people there that night and word spread pretty quickly. The following week, to his surprise, he walked into a full house, with everyone there to see The Fireman!
JJ Spangler was born James Joseph Spangler Jr. on December 25, 1971, in Colorado Springs, Colorado to Linda and "Joe" Spangler. His father's side of the family was spread throughout Colorado, Kansas, and Missouri. His mother's side of the family was entirely from Texas, stretching from Seguin, all the way up to Amarillo. With his uncle and grandfather on his father's side both fire chiefs, and a great deal of musical talent on both sides of the family, they provided encouragement and the talent for both fire fighting and also within the music industry.
By age 3, JJ had his first guitar and began learning to play on his own. With the help of a couple of record players and his own radio, he learned all the classics, to the point of performing them anytime and anywhere. By age 10, JJ also began playing the fiddle, and performed live for the first time at his great grandfathers' retirement party with close friends, who also had a band in Amarillo. Backed up by his baby brother singing Willie Nelson's "On the Road Again", JJ created a new version of the song with the fiddle.
Early on in life, JJ had the fortune of meeting and actually getting to know such artists as: Waylon Jennings, Jessie Colter, Willie Nelson, Mickey Gilley, Johnny Lee, Michael Martin Murphy, Exile, Alabama and many others. JJ spent as much time behind the scenes and back stage as he possibly could get. He decided early on, aside from firefighting, music was the only real love he would ever be able to count on to support his livelihood, and eventually his family.
In 30 years of playing music and entertaining crowds from all walks of life, JJ was always concerned with putting his family first and wanting to insure his children would grow up with a father and mother in a happy home. The opportunity to tour and even be signed with a major record label had to be put on hold more than a few times. With his children, two boys, growing in leaps and bounds and hoping to follow in their father's footsteps, JJ answered the door of opportunity fearing it would be the last time. In January of 2011, began pursuing his career on a national and now worldwide level. The country singer, songwriter and entertainer from Colorado started recording and is quickly becoming a household name in country music, emphasizing the heart of classic and cowboy country.
