Sort of a valedictory to Jerry's career. Unbelievably moving and sad. Jerry voice either is or was massaged to be decent -- quite unusual at this stage of his life. To my mind, the last truly great Dead family performance. And Grisman's mandolin work is beyond brilliant.

Classic version from the "Fallout from the Phil Zone" album. Probably the best short-ish Dead track ever. Jerry's solo just builds and builds after Bobby's rhythm lead-in. For reasons best known to themselves, the Dead liked to build energy and then blow it off. This track NEVER lets up. I c...

This track really rocks! I'm only a decade shy of these guys, and they were my heroes (Grateful Dead, Airplane --> Hot Tuna) during those crazy years of the late 60's and early 70's. I'm long over the drugs and their delusions (as are the musicians -- if they were not, they'd be dead by now). ...

@Adams1984100 There's a dubiously edited version (5:04) with a cleaned up audio on YouTube also. Search on "All Star Jam" and you'll find it. This one is the raw live performance, from as broadcast by Italian state TV from Rome, Italy on November 11th, 1987. The other version was the more poli...

There was a tremendous amount of inter-generational hostility in that era. CSNY's suggestion that both parents and children should "know they love you" was a very needed statement at that time. Jerry always disclaimed being a guru of the psychedelic movement, but of course he was. The presence of...

I remember going to the Fillmore East in early 1969 to see the one-hit wonder, Iron Butterfly, do In-a-Gadda-Da-Vida. It was noteworthy at the time, only because it was long. The opening act turned out to be some unknown-to-me Brits called Led Zeppelin. They opened with this number, and the ro...

@ZOOTSUITBEATNICK1 I saw them, too, in 1967, at the Palm Gardens. The Grateful Dead were on the same bill. I didn't know who the Dead were, and was too high to find out. I was surprised and thrilled when Doc Hak showed up in Binghamton, where I was an undergraduate.

The Penguin
One of my favorite songs of the show. The musicians were stretching out by this time and the licks nearly melted the back of my head.

You guys are so incredibly fabulous!!! I never heard this tune in my life. Yet by the time you were a couple of minutes in, I simply had to get up and boogie! Like I was still 20 and you were the Grateful Dead! I don't know how that lame audience managed to be so indifferent. The Dead fed of...

@BrooklynAtty And a junkie who died of an OD. It's so tragic what ended up happening to these incredibly talented musicians. After tuning in and turning on, you either went straight or died. I'm still here, more than 40 years after my last joint.
