Disclaimer: For many of the historical examples listed (particularly those who fought as soldiers), it can be difficult to determine whether they were truly men with (what we would now call) transsexualism, or whether they were women intentionally disguising themselves for career, adventure, or romance. Please conduct your own further research if you want to know more about any individual listed here.
Note: (in reply to a YT message) Brandon Teena and Billy Tipton were not, to the best of my knowledge, on testosterone. I separated the video into three roughly chronological sections- 1. historical / before medical use of genital surgery and hormones in the 1910's-1930's. 2. "modern" but deceased: guys who lived when medical transition was available, but have died. 3. Still alive.
Since Billy Tipton and Brandon Teena both died after the introduction of medical transition to treat transsexualism, I included them in the second group, even though they did not transition.
Note: Steve Dain should be in the second group rather than the third, since he passed on in 2007.
Note: A guy who communicated directly with Mr. Tornabene (sp?) in the late 1980's, tells me his name may have been Tony or Antonio rather than Angelo. His book, Emergence, was published under the pen name(s) "Mario Martino with hariett" in 1977. check back here later for more detailed information.

19. Angelo Tornabene * Better known as pseudonym "Mario Martino", author of Emergence (1977) *name unverified, may have been Antonio or Tony. Listed as Angelo in a collection of Lou Sullivan's papers, here: http://content.cdlib.org/view?docId=tf9199n9v3&chunk.id=dsc- 1.7.6&brand=oac

"The heart wrenching story of a man dying of ovarian cancer in Georgia and the Dr.'s who wouldn't treat him, won top honors at the Sundance Film Festival for best documentary. The film traces the final year in the life of Robert Eads, an unfailingly good-humored 52-year-old female-to-male transsexual from the back hills of Georgia. Diagnosed with ovarian cancer after having lived as a man for many years, Eads was refused treatment by more than two dozen doctors, who feared his presence in their offices would embarrass and offend other patients. At the Sundance Film Festival Director/Producer Kate Davis was a bit shell shocked when the film won for the Best Documentary. With her at the mike were some of the cast. When she spoke of "the ease at which the people of the film had allowed her into their inner most beings", the crowd cheered and clapped. As the cameras scanned the audience you could see people crying at the injustice of what had happened to the main character, Robert. Lola, Robert's love, had the best comment of the night, "This film shows we are all human even if some of you find us a bit fruity." This had the crowd laughing. When Max, Robert's adopted son, stepped to the mike, at Kate's urging, he quietly said "This would make Robert proud." The film, "Southern Comfort" closes with the words "Nature delights in diversity. Why don't human beings?"
"Southern Comfort" program notes from the Sundance Film Festival: With a natural beauty, quiet power, and a clear voice, Kate Davis has created what must be one of the most remarkable documentaries of our times about gender, family, and love relationships. Southern Comfort is a wonderfully humanistic portrait of transgendered life as it is lived deep inside Ku Klux Klan territory in the rural trailer community of Toccoa, Georgia. ... Kate Davis's compassionate verite' style of filmmaking portrays the lives of Robert and his community in such an organic way that their exceptionally unique and challenging stories feel as natural as the changing of seasons. ... Raw, emotional, and provocative, Southern Comfort is a moving and illuminating examination of gender and the human spirit that will surely open minds as it opens hearts." -- Shari Frilot (from http://www.ftminfo.net/sundance.html)

A documentary feature about a [female-to-male] transgender seminary student, and his struggle with love, faith, and gender identity.
From the Synopsis: Eventually, Malcolm, while still under the name Miriam, ended up at seminary. Initially he enrolled to see if he could reconcile the conflict between his heart and the things being taught in his home church. Much to his surprise, Malcolm found his greatest support in his new Christian community at Iliff Theological Seminary and began the process of gender transition. The first—and in some ways biggest—of these steps was taking on his new name and repeatedly saying to people, "From now on, call me Malcolm."
As the film begins, so does Malcolm's final year of seminary. It is a time filled with great concern and apprehension. Before the school term begins, he steps away from his safe environment and sets out on a road trip. He travels across the country visiting with many people along the way, each of whom have a different perspective on the issues of identity, faith, and love.
