Historians only use era's to make it easier for them to highlight points in military reform history. In reality there weren't really "eras" as much as a motley crew of armies that followed whatever their generals did. The way EB has it is the Camillian Reforms, meant to combat the flexibility of the Gauls and the Samnites via the Acer Triplex formation; the Polybian reforms, meant to correspond to the troops described by the historian Polybius in his descriptions of the Punic Wars; and finally the Marian Reform era, meant to identify the make up of the Roman army at the time of his Consulship.
