Rain
January 1, 2009
Ookala, Hawaii

At about 5:00 p.m. on New Year's Day, the rain started up again and washed away all the toxic firecracker smoke. This is the time of the day when I put the chickens to bed, feed the fish, and close everything up for the night.

Happy New Year!

Aloha,
Susie

Wearing sunscreen is a must in summer -- but it can also be a bummer. Did you know conventional sunscreen can be toxic to your body and the planet? Umbra looks on the bright side, slathering on advice for finding a sunscreen that's eco-friendly and effective.

Talk to Dove before they destroy Paradise Forests:
http://www.greenpeace.org/dove

UPDATE: Thanks to the staggering public support for our international Dove campaign in April 2008, Unilever has now agreed to play their part in saving the Paradise Forests of South East Asia. As the biggest single buyer of palm oil in the world, Unilever has a special responsibility to help clean up the industry that's behind so much forest destruction.

They have agreed to support the call by Greenpeace for an immediate moratorium on deforestation for palm oil plantations. They have also agreed to urgently contact other major companies calling on them to support the moratorium.

This is the first success in a broader campaign to secure real change on the ground in South East Asia -- to stop the palm oil industry from destroying the Paradise Forests. Greenpeace campaigners will work with Unilever for th next six months (starting May 2008) to bring together a major coalition of companies to make the moratorium a reality. We will see at the end of this period how things are progressing and if we need to change our campaign approach.

About the music:
The song's called "There They Go". It was made specifically for the Greenpeace video by a Czech band called Ohm Square. http://www.myspace.com/ohmsqua re

We all know pollution and toxins are bad for you. But the Environmental Working Group has conducted perhaps the deepest analysis of this issue on the most vulnerable demographic on the planet. Some shocking information in one of the most entertaining presentations of the conference. Ken Cook speaking on the Health plenary at Tides' Momentum 2008.

About Me: The Canary Report is the leading blog with news, information and inspiration for people with Multiple Chemical Sensitivity.

MCS is a health problem where sensitive people, up to 30% of the general population, react unfavorably to very low levels of synthetic chemicals in the environment from things like pesticides, cigarette smoke, paint and photocopier fumes, and perfumes. Symptoms can be fleeting to severe: rapid heart rate, shortness of breath, fatigue, dizziness, nausea, or difficulty concentrating.

People with MCS are often called canaries after the birds miners took with them into the mines; if the canary died from toxic air in the shaft, the miners had time to escape with their lives. People with chemical sensitivities are the canaries of the modern world.

But its not just chemically sensitive people affected by a toxic environment. The general public is exposed to tens of thousands of chemicals that didnt exist until a few decades ago. Many of these chemicals, some found in everyday household products like cleansers and cosmetics, are known to be or are suspected of causing cancer, reproductive problems, developmental disabilities, and heart disease.
