The best answer we can give at this point, as has been said in earlier comments, is that we simply don't have the data to make any definite claims.

"Why" is a purely human concept. Things happen because they must, not through hard determinism or some overarching order, but because the particular sequence of events that have occurred have particular consequences. Essentially, the whole is the sum of its parts.

@buonocj Probably a lot of the reason his voice sounds so different since about 2006 is that he cleaned up. According to some older interviews there was a while in which he was rarely sober or lucid. Could be inaccurate, though, as that's purely from very distant memory.
