OK News Flash (for me too):
My Albino Gecko turned out to be a boy! :( I now have them in separate cages and he/she is now much more calm! both of them (Tia Dalma and Cowboy) have learned to wait for the food when I take out the dishes!

I used to use the walnut shell stuff that you're talking about, but then my first leo, Dash, ate it and died of compaction :(. Now I use calci-sand, but am going to change it to reptile carpet ASAP.

Sorry it took so long for me to respond, I've been pretty busy lately. anyways, for substrate, i normally use Ground new england walnut shells, or if i really feel like pampering the little guys, i use white (no added dyes, it turns their feet and bellies different colors) T-Rex Calci-Sand. It's pretty expensive, and kind of a pain in the butt, but it's great for gravid females. Some of my females will actually scoop the calci-sand up by the mouthful; like they know it's calcium. Hope this helps :)
