It was early on in the times when the gods were busy building Asgard and everything. They had just finished erecting Valhalla when an artisan came by, offering to build a huge protective wall around the Home of the Gods.

He promised to build this wall in one and a half year, a protection against Jotuns, trolls and monsters.

He was modest in his payment requests, just Frøya, with the Sun and the Moon thrown in for good measure.

The gods talked the matters through at length, as they would really like such a fabuolous wall. The were not to keen, however, on fulfilling the payments requested...
Finally they decided on the following deal: if the man could complete the wall by one winter, and if, at first summer's day, the wall was completely finished, he would get his payments. But he was forbidden to employ other men for the job.
The artisan agreed to this, but asked to use his horse; Svadilfare, for the job. Loke persuaded the gods to agree to this.
The man set about his work. During daytime he worked, and at night, he brought rocks forth with his horse.

The gods were amazed by the speed he worked and how quickly the wall was erected.
They became reallty frightened that he would manage to finish the job within in time.
They were not about to part with Frøya, for sure.

Summer's day was approaching, and three days before the time limit,
there was just a bit by the main gate not completed.
The gods met and talked of how to get out of this predicament. When discussing who had been most eager for this terrible deal, they found out that Loke was the guilty party, once again. They threatened to kill him if he didn't come up with something fast. Loke, afraid, promised to think of something.
In the evening the artisan got under way once more to gather rocks with his trusty horse. Suddenly, a gay mare scampered into the road ahead of them. The man's horse charged after her at once, and there were no rocks pulled that night.

The same thing happened the next night, with no rock-gathering as result. When the man realized that he had laboured for nothing, as the wall could never be finished in time, a Jotun's rage came over him.
Now the gods see that it is indeed a mountain Jotun they've had as winter labour. They feel that they are freed from the deal and call for Tor. Eager to please, he chucked his hammer Mjølner at the Jotun's head and killed him.
But the company Loke had kept with Svadilfare resulted in a foal with eight legs. It became the finest horse known to man or god, named Sleipner and given to Odin.
