She is obviously blocking the sun from her eyes. As the scene ends and she is turning towards the camera you can see her hand is empty (that occurs almost at the end, view it in full screen and you will see) Interesting though that anyone would think there was a cell phone 82 years ago!

That's the legendary Johnny Kay on lead. He was Bill Haley's lead guitarist from 1960 to 1972. He suffered a terrible eye injury that's why he's wearing the patch.
