Yet it's the jarring quality of her voice that arrests me and so many others--truthful, raw, uncompromising. Whether you like her or not, you can't mistake her for anyone else. Diana's voice may be more palatable in a conventional sense, but Billie is the one I turn to again and again....

Actually, Billie's version was recorded on January 12, 1937 in New York, just 4 days after Mildred's Chicago recording. But as polished and exquisite as Mildred's version is, I still love Billie's more fiery and sexy rendition. The way she growls, "My heart's on fire," if that's not ...
