The domain of rationalism, critical thinking, and science!
About Me:
I might be switching concentrations. I'm not sure, however, string theory probably will not be the correct description of the universe so forget that path of research
On the side, I teach undergraduate mathematics and physics courses at a university.
Hometown:
LHC...haha (come on black holes)
Country:
United States
Occupation:
Student
Interests:
I am in the Army National Guard while I finish my graduate degrees in math and physics. I also teach as an adjunct physics faculty member at a local junior college. I am obsessed with physics...obviously. I'm a fun, down to earth guy that is really into art, film, music, philosophy and travel, Mixed Martial Arts, and, again, science. I compete in sports: middle distance specialist in track. I also run road races in the off-season.I love to party, go the movies, the theater, art shows, hiking all over the place, etc.....Feel free to drop me an email anytime.
Movies:
I like all types of movies. e.g. Theatrical: A Beautiful Mind, i Robot, Full Metal Jacket, Black Hawk Down, Tombstone, Before Night Falls, Don Juan DeMarco, Matrix, Braveheart, Last of the Mohicans, Talented Mr. Ripley, Saving Private Ryan, Dances with Wolves, Ghostbusters, Real Genius, Fletch (Lives), The Naked Gun, Dodage Ball, Just Friends, Waiting, Wedding Crashers, Swingers, etc...History Channel, Military Channel, Science Channel, Big Bang Theory (sitcom), Generation Kill (mini series), news, PBS, The Late Show, The Tonight Show, and the Late Night with Conan O'Brien.
Music:
I like rock, classic rock, 80s, alternative, punk, oldies, classical, and theatrical music.e.g. Coldplay, U2, Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkins, Pear Jam, Dave Matthews Band, REM, etc...
Books:
Mostly the boring shit that most people hate. I read math and science books. If I have free time I do read some fiction or non-fiction books.

Hello, I am currently teaching A-level physics (pre-university). I have spent most of my professional career as a nuclear physicist and then teaching undergraduate at University of Manchester and University of Liverpool. Originally trained as an Engineer with a Masters and Engineering Doctorate later on. The unicorn analogy was flippant and is just thrown out and is not meant to be an exhaustive comparison. However the belief in something that cannot be shown to exist is a decent analogy. The unicorn argument goes like this: I have a unicorn in my garage. Only people who actually believe can see it. However some who say they believe really don't believe in their heart, that is why they still do not see it. In fact no-one, not even the claimant can see it. It is a true belief system akin to the invisible dragon. But your point is valid and correct.

jzuidema, thank you for the reminder. I actually tried to clean up the audio on the Hughes/Hovind debate about two months ago but I am afraid it will be more involved than I first thought. I tried to pass the audio through a band-pass filter to attenuate the reverb (hoping it was of a slightly different frequency) but they are too close to reliably isolate it. I appreciate your attention and I will try to get to it up soon. If I can't clean up the audio, I will just post the darn thing and hope you all can make sense of it.

Why are you arguing from a historical perspective? Every scientist knows more about what the Muslims did for the sciences centuries ago than most people do today. That said, progress in science in the muslim world in modernity is utterly backward compared with the western push towards reductionism. The modern Muslim world is far more hostel to new theories in science than they were in centuries past. My favorite example is Turkey's conservative push to ban teaching evolution. Those conservatives are idiots and work to hurt the progress of humanity.

you beleive in your fellow man? you mean the same fellow man that has created wars for there personal greed and arrogance throughout the earth? and dont bring me it was beacuseo f religon..men who caused majority of wars had nothing to do with religon itw as muisguided belifs in themselves that caused the wars..as for your view that computer and internet are results of non-beleiveing scientists..truly you seem naive to the realities of this world? please do go and research how came up with numerics in teh first place!? it was the result of beleiving muslims..as were many great leaps in science's..and do please try and answer the comments instead of just rambaling around them..

also to your below comment - The real world, the universe, is far more beautiful and wondrous than any made-up bickering, jealous, and wimpy god. I take the hard road and believe in my fellow man that is why I am scientists - to make the world better for others. Go ahead and keep using your computer and internet, a result of which was due to non-believing scientists.
