I am 47 years old (I know, I really DO look like I am 29, and so I am holding there), and love to learn, whether through books, articles, etc., in other words, reading, as well as through experience.

I am LDS, and have been all my life. Not the Peter Priesthood type, but an LDS none the same.

I teach the Elder's Quorum. (They haven't kicked me out yet for translating out the Hebrew and Greek scriptures, so so far, I am in the good - GRIN!)

I have lived here in Idaho all my life, and love it here.

I believe in studying out the best of all religions, all sciences, etc., and love to put together ideas from 40 or more different sources, and viewpoints, in order to see if underlying patterns, thoughts, or new interpretations come about.

Inevitably they do, and they have done so for over 30 years with me, so now I am to the point where I share my insights and interpretations. I love to learn, and love to share.

My wife called me the "Backyard Professor" and it stuck instantly with everyone, so here I am, the Backyard Professor. I have a B.S. from Idaho State University in History.

I love learning languages, and work on Hebrew, Greek, Latin, German, French, Egyptian Hieroglyphic, Arabic, Coptic, and Sanskrit, as I have time.

I also love making my wood art with my scrollsaw.
Country: United States
Interests and Hobbies: I love to research religions, ancient texts, Mormonism, and do woodart. I love to video record the beauty of the world and teach the power of ancient religious, philosophical, and scientific ideas.

TheBackyardProfessor, HELLO! pt 1 of 2
Yes Joseph was fluent in the Bible, as you note. He even took it beyond normal Mormons and learned the Hebrew, Greek, and German, as he had time. That's why I have jumped on that. I believe Joseph was entirely correct, and I aim on following that awesome example of improving our minds. His finest sermons came because of his learning in the Bible and languages. (11 hours ago)

I give you a 5 star rating because of your trust and faith in letting me know your story. Thanks and I respect your experiences and life. I don't agree with your coclusions or even the way you have made decisions of what to do, but we are in this together. I don't have all the answers either, but I don't need to. I can live with problems, because on this side of the veil we are limited, by the nature of our humanity. I can live with that, and still have belief. I didn't turn it off & saw it all. That is a nice video response, and I am glad to make your acquaintance. I understand about those 1 star ratings. Don't let it bug ya. And you actualy got tired of the BofM?! Whoa...... I have read it over 60 times, like you appear to have done, and I *still* find things that excite me about it. I can't keep up with all the pieces either. So? That's called living by faith. I learn as I can, etc., but is it really necessary to have everything all nice and lined up in a row? That doesn't happen now (11 hours ago)

Lets not forget what the brillant Professor said " Some of this information will make people feel extremely uncomfortable ". Christanity was never homogeneous ; and still isn't - think a lot of people are missing this important point and maybe more importantly ask yourself why?
oldreligionadvocate | July 26, 2008
No I don't - compare the gnostic gospels with the narrative ones which are accepted as cannon. The gnostic gospels are much more plausible because they just give a eye witness account rather than the lets try and fill in the blanks gospels.
skyaglow | July 26, 2008
dear old religion
from what I read, it says Jesus woke them up and began speaking to them... Don't you think it's possible that Jesus shared the entire account with them?
oldreligionadvocate | July 26, 2008
We are kindred souls professor ; but a gulf exists between us due to circumstances beyond our control. I am no where near as erudite but the same subjects jazz me to no end .
Here's a guestion , if all the disciples were asleep in the Garden of Gethsemane who new what Jesus did or who he prayed to & how was that written down some 60 years later with such canonical authority?
TheBackyardProfessor | July 25, 2008
I haven't seen Hamori's book yet. It does have an interesting title, without doubt. Speed reading? Yes I took courses earlier in life. I practiced it for a while, but have slowed way down now. Ya gotta realize I have been reading at the very least a book a week for 30 years. That doesn't count the myriads of articles from the scholarly journals either. That's not too difiicult.
kryoung1983 | July 25, 2008
Kerry What do you think of Esther J. Hamori's book "When Gods Were Men": The Embodied God in Biblical and Near Eastern Literature ' It looks interesting...have you read it and do you have any thoughts on her ideas?
kryoung1983 | July 24, 2008
Kerry. Are you a speed reader? I can't think of any other way you would be able to get through the voluminous material that you are able to digest. I mean you said you have a few thousand books.
TheBackyardProfessor | July 23, 2008
Oh I will continue sharing vids and information. I don't even think death will silence me - GRIN! Heh..... maybe that will give the angels incentive to watch over me here and keep me here for awhile. They are probaly saying to themselves amongst each other "Hey! Lets make sure he stay *there* for a while man, when he gets here he ain't gonna shut up either!" LOL!
LatterDaySaint1029 | July 23, 2008
I love what your doing Keep it up.
kryoung1983 | July 22, 2008
Hey Kerry I was thinking of one thing you said. About the whole James thing. i think there may be some truth to this, but we don't have the whole picture. For instance if people two thousand years from now looked at the lds church and what was going on would they see the same issues with the flds church with their claime as succession? After all when the church was organized it had its share of problems, its share of conflict, with the Prophet Joseph and all. Could it be we are seeing some of the same issues in some of the scholarship you are bringing up?
