An Atheist & a 'Hindu'?!
Grow your knowledge, I say. Hinduism is NOT a religion like we think it is. It is a collection of various cultures, beliefs, traditions, philosophies, sciences, etc. Hindus are not all Polytheists, there are Monotheists, Nature worshipers, Spiritualists, Satanists & Ritualists, too, most of the times in combination. Hinduism does NOT have a central authority or set of mandatory guidelines. Some Hindus are into Gita, others into Ramayana or Vedas or Upanishads & so on...or into all of these scriptures/ books.
Atheist tradition in Hinduism dates back to about 6th century BC. Carvaka was the chief propounder of it in ancient India. Carvakas rejected caste system, belief in after life, authority of the Vedas, Karma theory, creationist God, etc. Sensual indulgence, health, materialism and naturalism were their articles of belief and purpose. This Atheistic tradition went into oblivion around 14-15th century AD, when India was largely under Islamic invaders' rule. Now, it seems it is again gaining some momentum.
American writer and professor Dale M Riepe: "It may be said from the available material that Carvakas hold truth, integrity, consistency, and freedom of thought in the highest esteem."
While life remains, let a man live happily,
let him feed on butter* (*luxuries of life) even though he runs in debt;
When once the body becomes ashes,
how can it ever return again?
