MARYLOU IN BURGUNDY
I never will forget your way the first time that I met ya. Hey The style on you sure took me by surprise. In your eyes there was a spark and you was chasin' out the darkness from the room Just like the moon upon the rise And yer hair hung in dark tresses to yer shoulders at the neck as You was checkin' out the room for just to see And around yer arms and back so meticulously wrapped You wore a shawl of Royal Burgundy.
I believe the month was may and the weather was still grey. I believe I played another new guitar. I was workin' for the money and the music and the fun I had Just learnin' how to play the local bars. Just another av'rage ev'nin'. No one list'nin', no one leavin' No one payin' much attention, even me. Then I looked up and got an eyeful of Black Irish, so delightful In a shawl of Royal Burgundy
C I've felt the sun on my face H And the rain's cool embrace, O Seen more places anyone could ever see R But I've never in my life U Seen anything that's half as nice S As seein' Marylou in Burgundy.
If you've ever lost the lyric to the melody you're playin' Well you really get a sense of where you are.
And you gave me such a glare when you saw that I was star'n' at ya
Then turned around and sat down at the bar.
So I ducked back in my song but I looked up before too long
And shortly after turned about three shades of green
'Cause then he walks in from the cold and throws an arm about the shoulder
Of the Irish in the shawl of burgundy
C I've felt the sun on my face H And the rain's cool embrace, O Seen more places anyone could ever see R But I've never in my life U Seen anything that's half as nice S As seein' Marylou in Burgundy.
I got to travel quite a bit. I got to work a wee bit more. One day I fin'ly got to get out of the bars. It was life and love and laughter, dreams of happy ever after. It was wanderlust and too many guitars. Now it's a warm chair by the fire and a slow pull on the briar And the charm of an inspirin' memory. See I've still never in my life seen anything that's half as nice As Marylou in burgundy.
C I've felt the sun on my face H And the rain's cool embrace, O Seen more places anyone could ever see R But I've never in my life U Seen anything that's half as nice S As seein' Marylou in Burgundy.

HIGH AND LONESOME
In any other situation we prob'ly both would laugh But it seems the love we once held dear just up and took a bath And I am sorry you're unhappy, I'm sorry you are sad. Guess I'm sorriest of all to think that you believe we've loved our last. I tried to wait the storm out but I couldn't take the chill. I'm headin' up the mountain now, I'm headin' for the hills (and I'm so)
CHORUS
High and lonesome So high and lonesome So high and lonesome
I know it ain't all you and you know it ain't all me But you can only beat your head against the wall so long And oh you see We talked until the air was blue then 'til the air was clear. The only thing we've left unsaid's "Goodbye, so long. I'm out of here." But I'll haunt you in your mem'ry and you'll see me in you're dreams N' ev'ry time you look into the clouds, my face is what you'll see (I'll be so)
CHORUS
High and lonesome So high and lonesome So high and lonesome
Last night I reached the Lakehead too late for turnin' back. Paused long enough to paint your name upon the rocks in black And in the chilling of the ev'ning, fell down upon my knees, Cold black ribbon of highway cuttin' North-West through the trees N' I saw God on Five Star Whiskey then the bottle up and dried. Out of liquor, love, and money, clean out of luck and I (am so)
CHORUS
High and lonesome So high and lonesome So high and lonesome

IF I WERE THE KING
Sometimes I have to wonder If I had the chance Would I rise to the occasion In the proper circumstance? Would I lead with head or heart Or would I turn and walk away? Would I speak with measured word If I had a say? But of one thing I am certain As the wicked took to wing They'd have nowhere to land If I were the king.
If the hand that held the sceptre And the head that wore the crown Were mine, I tell ya mister Big changes would come down No parachute or bailout No bonus or free ride A set of stocks on ev'ry corner For ev'ryone who lied And none could stand against the wind My wrath and vengeance bring; No place left to hide If I were the king
BRIDGE
From Washington to Moscow, Mombasa to Mumbai There's none who could escape the din of righteous battle cry In the name of ev'ry starving, bloated belly it would ring The whole wide world around If I were the king.
If I were reigning monarch And if I had a say If anybody disagreed, Well then they'd have to pay My justice would be swift; How true the arrow flies, And mercy just another word In a lexicon of lies And undoubtedly I'd fa kit up The way all people do The same way you would too If you were the king

THE BETTER FIGHT
With some fine skills in my pocket and a small sense of adventure I will build myself a rocket and leave this self-imposed indenture Do my very best to hasten and make ready my departure Sail across a sea of stars with the true aim of an archer
Won't look back in want or worry, just ahead to peace of mind Watch the hassles and the hurry and the bad times fade behind Venture out and find my fortune, watch my futures all unfold Live life to its full proportion with my heart and with my soul.
CHORUS
And if I live to be a hundred I may never get it right But there'll be no small consolation For having fought the better fight
I have lived so long in anger; run too long in despair I would now prefer to linger as my purpose becomes clear Trace my pathway with one finger; give myself an equal share I'd no sooner be a pris'ner than fall victim to my fear
CHORUS
And if I live to be a hundred I may never get it right But there'll be no small consolation For having fought the better fight
SOLO
BRIDGE
How many days will fly? How many years roll by? Why would you wait so long? For the moment only lasts until it's gone
There's so many miles before you with so little time to spare There's a grace here that implores you and redemption if you dare You can't let fear or worry slow you down along the way There is only life before you; there are only better days.
CHORUS
And if you live to be a hundred You may never get it right But there'll be no small consolation For having fought the better fight TAG There'll be no small consolation For having fought the better fight
