Obviously it depends on the type of remote. If it uses a frequency the cell phone can transmit, it will work. Otherwise it won't.

It's true, it's that easy. Basically when you put pressure on the cylinder with the first instrument, you are pushing the pins inside against the edge so they stick. Yeah with nothing else around it will work but you have to be careful since if the alkaline battery is strong it can overheat the button cell and it can explode.
