@Lisnageeragh I know exactly what you mean and would agree with you as a rule. However in Kearns' particular case this doesn't apply, IMO.
Those emphases etc that you mention are extroverted and take the singer out to the audience. By eschewing them Kearns brings the audience in to him. Listen to...
