I'd be one of the first to happily sign up for the Greater Good when the Tau stopped by. The Imperium may be powerful, but it revolves around death, decay, and brainwashed ignorance.

Meanwhile, Tau are the sole symbol of hope in the world of 40k. Their strength truly does come from the Greater Good by showing other races mercy. Their empire is built from reason, compromise and diplomacy. When diplomacy fails, combat is swift and based on pacification rather then decimation.
