I've probably got more time flying retractable gear complex fighter/commercial aircraft than YOU have driving...NO it doesn't just happen. It's actually quite rare under THESE circumstances.

I'll tell you what I tell some of my students after a "bumpy" landing in which they get all worked up over...

ANY landing you can walk away from is a GOOD landing, any landing in which you can use the airplane again is a GREAT one!

Your right...I was in CIC when they called for an emergency "Green Deck". I believe they were doing FCF's and were between us and the USS Stein. I do remeber the pilot, his name was Eric, and his wife and newborn baby were both waiting for him at Pearl.
