Hey, I'm fifty, I am definitely a longhaired hippie, but old-fashioned. I'm a musician, teach guitar.. music is my life. I've played since I was seven, played with Jerry Garcia for a couple years at his house, (got to play with Grisman and Pete Sears at Jerry's Christmas party in 1991, that was a thrill) I'm not really a Deadhead but I sure loved Jerry. I got to have backstage passes for a couple years, a laminate in 92, that was really fun. He airbrushed me a tie in his art studio, one of only four HAND-airbrushed in existence, as far as the family knows! He told me, "you now have the only hand-airbrushed Jerry tie in the whole world!" and laughed. THAT was cool, it's all dayglow colors. And NO, I'd never sell it!
I got a banjo when I was twelve, and played guitar in G until 1991, when Jerry taught me the D tuning. He said, " since you like slide so much, you should try D" and it was such a revelation... I never went back. (except for a week here and there) I havent played slide in a long time, though I have a 1935 wooden Dobro and an all-metal National Resonator guitar. I play kind of Leo Kottke style. My favorite guitar is a classical, and it works great for blues. Rambling Jack Elliot autographed it with a Sharpie at a Garcia Christmas party! I put a steel string on the high D, it gives it a brighter sound.
I got invited to Jerry's because I was making furniture for him, and was given free run of his house for delivering the work. I was invited two years earlier just to come and play for fun, but I was too shy! I spent a few long weekends at his house and got to know him real well, one on one. He was a really smart and funny guy.

I ran heavy equipment for many years in Carmel/Monterey/Big Sur, Cal. but moved to the Sierras in 1983 to run snowcats at a ski area, and moved to Tahoe in 1990 to run cats at Sierra At Tahoe. I did a lot of winter mountaineering for many years.
I lived on a sailboat in Monterey Harbor for three summers and will always miss the windchimes of the rigging ringing on the masts in the wind.
I've built houses, drove trucks, kind of a jack of all trades, but I'm semi-retired and just teach guitar now.
I'm single, and it's always been a dream of mine to meet a girl who plays guitar. Maybe, a girl who plays in D? Wouldnt THAT be something... qº¿ºp
One of my favorite songs is the Highwayman, by Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson and Waylon Jennings. It plays really well in Bminor in the open D tuning.
I like haunting, touching songs like the Highwayman, that stir your soul. Gillian Welch and David Rawlings are another of my favorites, I had to learn everything on Revival the same day I got it.
Vincent Black Lightning is another... old gospel, celtic music, bluegrass...
I was into pedal steel for a while, I had a rare Emmons 12-string, with six pedals and four knee levers... it had fiberoptic-lit fret markers, in green and red, for those dark, smoky venues... I got it from Pete Grant, and we discovered we had a mutual friend in Jerry Garcia. It turned out that when Jerry was first learning pedal steel, he was buddies with Pete, and called him up all the time to come over and give him tips and background to play with. An amazing thing happened at Pete's- Jerry gave Pete the twin- neck Z.B. maple pedal steel that Jerry used on the Teach Your Children track on the C.S.N. album... Jerry told me he had only been playing four months when Crosby called him up and demanded that he do that track. I don't know about you, but whenever I hear Teach Your Children, I just about get tears in my eyes... and I got to see and touch that beautiful ZB that he used, at Pete Grants. Wow.
