Wetherby Grove Fire

480 views 9 months ago
This video shows the story of Derek Stewart, a resident of Wetherby Grove in Gateshead who was the victim of a deliberately set fire earlier this year.

The fire was set by a youth (11 years old at the time) who initially denied a charge of arson with intent to endanger life but pleaded guilty to the lesser offence of arson being reckless as to whether life would be endangered. He was sentenced to a nine month youth referral order.

Mr Stewart was rescued by firefighters from his home following the incident in which rubbish in a store cupboard outside had been set alight with the fire quickly spreading to his door and flat.

Mr Stewart was immediately administered oxygen therapy prior by fire crews before being taken by paramedics to hospital where he was in critical care.
