Porto city, is known as the capital of the North of Portugal, or the undefeated city, the city that gave Portugal its name. Internationally famous for its wine, its bridges and its historical centre, distinguished as World Heritage by UNESCO, Porto is an important cultural centre and historically one of the political and economic pillars of the country. When we talk about the victorious city we cant forget its population that brings it to life and gives it more character and personality. The population has a strong accent that fills and resounds in your ears; theyre hardworking and enthusiastic, rough and opinionated. Porto is a symbol of progress that is not ashamed of its past and in it supports the present and plans the future. Future that according to Álvaro Castello-Branco, will have to be more sustainable. Portos municipality Councilor for the Environment considers that the Covenant of Mayors is a valuable tool, that it is ideal to show the way forward towards environmental sustainability.

Vila Nova de Gaia is the second largest municipality in Portugal and it is part of the Porto Metropolitan Area, more specifically in the south margin of the river Douro. The famous Port wine cellars are located in this city. Originally created by two independent towns, Gaia and Vila Nova, they became a city on the 28th of the June in 1984. The connection to the neighbor city is particularly strong, and not just because they share the heritage of the Port wine. In the past, bourgeois and noble families of the invincible city of Porto had farms and holiday houses in Vila Nova de Gaia. Currently, due to the rapid economic growth as well as the improvement in communications with the northern margin, Vila Nova de Gaia is home to a large percentage of the population that works in Porto. The Councillor Mário Fontemanha, in interview on the Covenant of Mayors, gives emphasis to the environmental concerns that have been part of the political agenda of Gaia City Council.

Reducing 20% of the CO2 emissions in the cities that signed the Covenant of Mayors is the same as annually planting trees in an area larger than Hungary, or remove more than 35 million cars from the streets. And estimating that the barrel of petrol goes up to 50 dolars by 2020, then we can save more than 8 thousand million € a year on importations.
